OVER THE GARDEN FENCE JUNE 29, 2002 Let’s look at this week’s garden checklist. No need to put off lawn improvement, whether it is a large area or a small spot that needs reseeding. As long as you can provide water, you can sow grass seed. Stop in at Wedel’s and we’ll tell you just how to have success with sowing grass seed at this time of year. With the onset of warm summer temperatures and high humidity, many lawns are experiencing disease problems. We have seen samples at the garden center this week of rust, melting out, leaf spot, and patch or fusariam disease. If any of these are showing up in your lawn, be sure to apply Scotts Lawn Disease Control to stop lawn diseases in their tracks before they do even more damage. Bronze birch borer adults have now emerged and susceptible trees should be sprayed now. Spray birch tree trunks and larger branches with Cygon. Also apply Bayer Systemic tree insect control at the tree’s root zone for additional protection. Be sure to irrigate birch trees thoroughly once a week throughout the summer. This is a good time to side dress vegetable plants with fertilizer. For most vegetables, use Plant Tone or Schultz water soluble plant food. In many gardens, potato plants are the size to be hilled. Before hilling up your potato plants, side dress with Plant Tone. After being hilled up, sprinkle on Preen weed preventer and “presto!” no more weeding this summer. If rose blossoms fail to open properly or not at all, thrips could be the culprit. Flower thrips cause the rose buds to ball up without opening and the petals to turn brown. When infestation is heavy, few flowers open normally. To control, all infested buds should be picked off and destroyed, then spray with Orthenex. George Wedel |
