OVER THE GARDEN FENCE APRIL 20, 2002 Well, at least our weather isn’t boring! Of late, we have only needed to wait for a few hours for a change. We saw everything from really cold temperatures early last week to record highs this week. Then again, we could be shoveling show like the folks in Marquette and Ironwood. So, let’s enjoy the beautiful flowers and plow ahead with our gardening projects. The early warm weather will require us to move our insect and disease control programs ahead on the calendar. Preventative measures are necessary for the following. Apply the first spring spray to control anthracnose on susceptible shade trees now. Anthracnose is the fungal disease that causes early summer browning and leaf drop on White Oak, Walnut, Dogwood, Sugar Maple, and Sycamore, to name a few. Control anthracnose with sprays of Thioallphanate now at bud swell, on May 10th, and again on May 20. Often pines and spruce are planted too close together to allow for healthy plants. If branches overlap, remove enough trees so sunlight reaches all parts of the tree. This will also improve air movement and drying conditions. Clumps of tall-growing, coarse, wide blade grasses are showing up in many lawns. These weed grasses are usually tall fescue or quack grass. These pesky grasses are perennial varieties and should be removed from fine turf areas. The best eradication method is to spray with Finale grass killer. After spraying, wait three days, scatter a peat-soil mix on treated areas, then spread Scott's Starter Fertilizer and a good grass seed blend. Rake lightly and then water in. Ladybugs, ladybugs, and more ladybugs! At times is seems like an invasion has taken place. Nearly every home has some of these pests inside. It usually means that there is an entry place where they come into the home in October, so get out the caulking gun and plug the holes. Pyrethrin sprays are safe to use and will kill the pesky ladybugs indoors. <--Back. |
