Azaleas
Most Azaleas are deciduous; though they belong to the genus Rhododendron and most Rhododendrons are evergreens. You will find approximately 50 varieties at Wedel’s and among them, a vast array of colors and blossom shapes. Azaleas feature funnel-shaped blossoms, and are excellent choices for borders, foundations and woodland edges. Light shade is recommended, as well as protection from wind.

Bamboo
An interesting shrub for your consideration: Yellow Groove Bamboo from Wedel's! This giant grass is a fast-grower with soft green foliage, and can reach 10 to 20 feet in height. It spreads by runners and can make an excellent screen. Bamboo is critter-resistant.

Boxwood
Usually seen pruned into formal hedges or interesting shapes, Boxwoods are also good in masses. Many varieties can be found at Wedel’s. Due to their shallow root systems, it is best not to cultivate around them, but provide well-drained, moist soil amended with mulch.

Holly
Not just for Christmas displays! Enjoy Holly shrubs year-round. American and Chinese Hollies feature glossy, sharply pointed leaves and red berries. Japanese Hollies’ leaves are smaller and more rounded. Also included in this group are Winterberries. Consult with our nursery pros about the variety you desire, and the care needed for your Holly shrub.

Inkberry
A member of the Ilex, or Holly family, Inkberry is a slow growing shrub. It retains its green foliage all year, and in the spring blooms with inconspicuous white flowers. In the summer, Inkberry produces small black berries which will attract birds. Plant Inkberry in partial shade and moist soil. It is not tolerant of drought conditions. This attractive shrub will reach a maximum height of 8 feet.

Kalmia
Kalmia, or Mountain Laurel, is a low to medium height shrub with a rounded to broad spreading habit. Wedel's carries approximately five varieties which offer blooms from white to rose-pink, that will appear from late spring to early summer. This shrub will perform best when planted in moist, acidic soil and full sun to shade conditions.

Pieris
Pieris is an evergreen shrub, which means its attractiveness remains throughout the year! The narrow, pointed leaves will remain shiny through winter, and in spring, Pieris will bloom with showy, drooping clusters of small white or pink flowers. Its new growth adds interest with its reddish tone. Plant Pieris in well-drained, rich soil and protect it from winter wind. You will be rewarded!

Pyracantha
Pyracantha offers shiny, dark green, dense leaves on an open, sprawling form. The thorny stems are best trained against a wall, fence or trellis. Easy to grow and drought tolerant, Pyracantha reaches from 3 to 10 feet tall. Perhaps its finest feature is its red or yellow berries, which also attract birds!

Yucca
Though it looks as though it should be in the desert, Yucca thrives in Michigan! It is drought resistant, and does best in full sun. This evergreen shrub grows in clumps, with sword-like leaves. In early to mid-summer, Yucca produces tall stalks with white flowers. What an eye-catcher!
