Bachelors Button
Bachelors buttons bloom so prolifically with so little care that they often are the first plants that children grow on their own. The nickname "cornflower" comes from the fact that the plant grows wild in the grain fields of southern Europe. Depending upon the variety, plants will grow to between 1 and 3 feet tall and are most effective when massed in beds and borders for color. Bachelor buttons are a cutting garden favorite, and they are one of the easiest flowers to dry for everlasting arrangements.

Bee Balm is a perennial herb native to Eastern North America. It has showy, red, pink, or lilac flowers in large heads or whorls of about 20-50 flowers at the top of the branching stem, supported by leafy bracts,the leaflets are a pale-green color.Bee Balm is easily grown in ordinary garden soil. It also grows well in heavy clay soils, requires a part shade to sunny place to grow.

False Dragonhead may seem similar to “true” Dragonhead, but this member of the mint family is different! With willow-like dark green leaves, its delicate flower spires may bloom in white, pink, lavender or purple. This plant spreads quickly, pushing out weeds, and may need to be divided in the spring. False Dragonhead is also known as Obedient Plant, as the flower heads may be turned by hand, and will retain the new position. It is also deer-resistant.

Loosetrife
In Michigan, when we hear “Loosestrife”, we think of the pervasive Purple Loosestrife which is undesirable. At Wedel’s, however, you will find a Loosestrife variety that is a keeper! Hairy Loosestrife has attractive burgundy foliage and large, yellow star-shaped flowers. It prefers wet conditions, such as pond edges and bogs, but will work in a moist border or wild garden.

This 30 inch beauty offers long-lasting color all summer. It resembles a small hollyhock, and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Prairie Mallow prefers moist soil, and will produce multiple blooms on each stem. Great for cutting!

Mallow Rose
Rose Mallow is often mistaken for Hibiscus, or Rose of Sharon. It grows to a height of 3 to 5 feet. It is a vigorous and fast grower, with profuse blossoms that can reach 4 inches across. Rose Mallow is not particularly choosy about soil.

Maltese Cross Catchfly

Tall spires of blue hooded blooms make this plant stand out! Often mistaken for Delphinium, Monkshood grows 36 to 42 inches tall over green foliage. It is deer-resistant and makes an excellent cut flower.

Round rosettes of foliage support 18 inch tall stems and flowers in a variety of colors. Deer avoid Mullein, but hummingbirds don’t! Deadhead this plant for more blooms.
