They are hardy and vigorous, and come in several colors. Some varieties re-bloom! Japanese and Siberian Irises bloom from late spring to early summer; they attract hummingbirds, but repel other critters. All Irises are wonderful for cutting. Scilla

Scilla
There are a few varieties of Scilla, the most popular being Scilla Siberica. These small plants bloom very early in the spring. Clumps of glossy green spiky leaves emerge first, followed by tiny blue bell-shaped blooms. Low-growing at only 4 to 6 inches, Scillas are a wonderful spring groundcover and would do especially nicely in a woodland setting.

Another variety of Scilla Wedel's carries is Spanish Bluebells; however, their classification has been changed to Hyacinthoides Hispanica. Spanish Bluebells have clusters of blue, pink and white flowers, and grow to 12 to 15 inches. Scillas are very hardy, and may be planted in masses in full sun or partial shade. Deer avoid these plants. Low-growing at only 4 to 6 inches, Scillas are a wonderful spring groundcover and would do especially nicely in a woodland setting.
