| Spring
just wouldn’t be spring without graceful blooming bulbs.
Among the first to announce the eagerly anticipated arrival
of spring are crocus, scilla, and snowdrops. What could be
more welcome? Follow that with bright daffodils, tulips, &
hyacinths then later in the season enjoy Dutch iris, anemone,
and allium. A well-planned bulb garden can provide cut flowers
and landscape flowers in Michigan from Mid-March through June.
Wedel’s spring flowering bulb selection can’t
be beat with around 325 varieties to choose from.

Daffodil
Daffodils, or Narcissus, are some of the earliest bulbs to bloom in our gardens. From the tiny 6 -inch 'Tete-a-tete' to the 18- inch 'Fortune', these flowers cheer us after a long winter. Varieties abound, with many petal configurations and colors to select from. Daffodils have the added advantage of being ignored by deer.

Iris
There are three types of Iris available at Wedel's; German, Japanese and Siberian. German Iris tend to be taller than the others, at 28 to 40 inches. They are hardy and vigorous, and come in several colors. Some varieties re-bloom! Japanese and Siberian Irises bloom from late spring to early summer; they attract hummingbirds, but repel other critters. All Irises are wonderful for cutting. Siberian Iris like wet conditions, so they are ideal for bogs and the edges of ponds.

Scilla
There are a few varieties of Scilla, the most popular being Scilla Siberica. These small plants bloom very early in the spring. Clumps of glossy green spiky leaves emerge first, followed by tiny blue bell-shaped blooms. Low-growing at only 4 to 6 inches, Scillas are a wonderful spring groundcover and would do especially nicely in a woodland setting.
Another variety of Scilla Wedel's carries is Spanish Bluebells; however, their classification has been changed to Hyacinthoides Hispanica. Spanish Bluebells have clusters of blue, pink and white flowers, and grow to 12 to 15 inches. Scillas are very hardy, and may be planted in masses in full sun or partial shade. Deer avoid these plants. Low-growing at only 4 to 6 inches, Scillas are a wonderful spring groundcover and would do especially nicely in a woodland setting.
