Preen should be used three times a year; early in spring, during midseason and again in the fall. For your new gardens, it is best to wait until the plants are 3 to 4 inches tall before using a weed preventer. That could mean that you'll need to do some weeding before the first application but by waiting you'll ensure your young plants will be unharmed by the preventer.
