FERTILIZERS

How often do I fertilize my indoor houseplant?

ALWAYS read the directions on the label of your fertilizer. They are all different. Once a month, every time, every other time - you don't want to starve or burn your plant - so read carefully. Wedel's carries Schultz® fertilizer. We think it is a good product and it keeps your plants growing well. However, the best thing about Schultz® house plant food, cacti food, orchid food and violet food is that you can use it every time you water which means you don't have to try to remember or mark your calendar when to fertilize next. This also helps, then, to not burn your plants.

What do the numbers on a bag of fertilizer mean?

Every bag of fertilizer has at least three numbers on it. The number represents the percentage of each element in the bag.

The first number (N) represents the percentage of nitrogen; the second (P), the percentage of phosphorus; the third (K) number represents the percentage of potassium. These nutrients are called the macronutrients.

Some fertilizers contain smaller amounts of what are called secondary nutrients. These are:  calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sulphur (S). Micronutrients, which are needed in very small numbers are:  iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), boron (B), copper (Cu) and molybdenum (Mo).

What does gypsum do for my soil?

Gypsum provides a source of calcium for the plants growing in your yard and garden. Calcium is necessary for cellular strength. Gypsum will also aid in improving drainage in clay soils however it must be reapplied every year or so since it does break down over time.
